Artist Residency at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort: Saying Goodbye! by Pleasant Folk

I depart Waldon Pond at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in rural Southwestern Pennsylvania on Friday! I had a wonderful time as an inaugural artist-in-residence from April through May. It was amazing to see Spring from within a real forest. The animals and plants were a huge inspiration. I cannot wait to apply all that I have learned to my future art projects.

Artist Residency at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort: Draw with Me by Pleasant Folk

Before arriving at Nemacolin Resort, I planned to teach art classes inside The Art Studio where regular classes are held. My classes never made it to the schedule, but I still offered guests at Waldon Pond something special!

When guests arrived to Waldon Pond, I had a few activities and snacks available for them. I drew a coloring page for little ones and developed a stencil project for older kids and adults. These were not structured classes, but guests could work on the projects alongside me inside my studio at Waldon Pond.

In my own art practice, I create templates or cut-out stencils so my illustrations are consistent. I have files and baggies full of them! The guests had a blast using my personal stencils or store bought stencils to create their own pictures on card stock paper.

Artist Residency at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort: New Characters by Pleasant Folk

I felt inspired to create a few characters based on my stay at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. I re-imagined the Resort’s bird logo as a friend to a sweet puppy! Puppies are a departure from my usual cat illustrations, but I wanted to challenge myself. I created Markee, the Busy French Bulldog who works in the resort.

A bit of a back story…The resort houses many artworks by Colombian artist Fernando Botero. The Fat Bird is a featured sculpture that sits in the fountain in front of the Chateau at Nemacolin Resort. The Resort commissioned artist Barney Boller to create a likeness of Botero’s fat bird to use as their logo. I then created Bo, the Round Little Bird named after Botero! The resulting comics are loosely inspired by Nemacolin Woodlands Resort set in the fictional New Woods Hotel.
