I recently participated in a digital fundraising competition called The People’s Artist, hosted by Johnny Depp, organized by Colossal, to support The Art of Elysium charitable organization. It was a thrilling summer challenge, so I’m documenting the experience here.
Artists were invited, after application approval, to secure votes ranging from free to $100 or more. A portion of the funds supported the charity. In my group, I finished in 13th place on free votes alone which is impressive if you ask me! There were several rounds in each group and then a winner’s circle: top 20, top 15, top 10, top 5, number 1. All first place winners, from dozens of groups, will compete with one another until a first place winner is chosen. This will last from May to August 2026. The grand prize is a cover story on Art Forum Magazine, $25k, and an exhibition in the Art of Elysium gallery. Good luck to everyone still in the game.
There is a lot of chatter and buzz among artists on social media about the ethics of The People’s Artist hosted by Johnny Depp and questioning whether or not it is a scam. I personally believe it is a legitimate opportunity with documented rules that I understand, for the most part. I called the Art of Elysium myself to confirm the legitimacy of the campaign and the staff spoke to me directly. Community outreach, classes and workshops, and supportive resources are what the charity offers to their local LA community. I’ve engaged in such work as an arts administrator, so I understand the mission.
I have been scammed, laughed at, and bullied in every corner of the art world as an administrator and artist. The People’s Artist is one of the most positive experiences I’ve had so far! I can engage my small audience in a lighthearted competition while supporting a great cause and promoting my art. That’s more opportunity than experiences I’ve had in the past.
This digital experience gave me a confidence boost after withdrawing from three shows due to personal circumstances. I hope to engage in more fun challenges in the future.
Have a Pleasant Day!
