At the start of the school year, some Texas schools might have families complete a form indicating they need to receive free lunches. What used to be reduced lunch is now free! According to Squaremeals.com, the 89th Texas Legislature approved funding to expand the reduced lunch program for two school years while deepening the benefits: ‘25-26 and ‘26-27. Those who qualified for reduced breakfast and lunch in the past, now get FREE breakfast and lunch for the coming school year.
There is a School Nutrition Program Income Eligibility Form on Squaremeals.org and an income threshold chart on BenefitsUsa.org. On FeedAmerica.org, there is a database of schools that offer free and reduced breakfast and lunch.
Ask your school’s office or principal for more information or a form that may need to be completed on site. In most school cafeterias, teachers will mark the quantity of students, or names of students, getting a school lunch on a preprinted list (general or class specific). Some schools have a point-of-sale machine where students punch in their pin number on a keypad. The lunch line rolls along smoothly for the students without any differentiation between those designated for a free lunch and the students billed for lunch later. This will be managed by the office at most schools. The teacher will leave the completed checklist in the cafeteria.

As a teacher since 2021, I had never been formally told these procedures or this information, which is why I started this blog series. Professional development or teacher orientation before classes began never covered these topics or specific procedures. I was just as nervous as the students on my first day of teaching! In the past, these supplies and forms are hard to locate or a complete mess in the cafeteria. What I did to improve the flow of lunch time at my old school was drag an empty desk to the front of the cafeteria. I found two paper trays: one for empty lunch forms and one for completed lunch tallies. I found a pen cup and filled it with pens. This created an efficient cafeteria with all the tools and supplies we needed and the other teachers were very happy.
It would be wonderful to have free school breakfast and lunch and snack, with healthy quality food, for all students in Texas, regardless of income. But, that requires legislation and a large funding body. In the meantime, it would be up to each school to organize such a feat. This information is meant for families that qualify for free lunches based on the current income driven model.
